COSTS SIMULATION
For our simulation let’s consider a farmer that milks 200 cows he is overfeeding Crude Proteins: 20% CP instead of 18% as prescribed in the recipe arranged by his nutritionists.
In terms of dry matter he is overfeeding 500g / day / cow and since he buffer feeds Soy this translates on 80g/day of Nitrogen per cow.
If we multiply the number of cows he is feeding for 80g of nitrogen we obtain the total amount of nitrogen in excess he is overfeeding.
1 kilo of Soya contains around 76.8g of N ( 480CP/6.25 ) s0 1 ton. of Soya equals 76Kg of Nitrogen
The price of 1 ton. of Soya is £ 340 ( DEC. 2014 Source: FARM BRIEF, HGCA)
The cost per kilo of nitrogen is £ 4.34 (340£ / 76 Kg ) so we can easly calculate the daily cost of the overfeeding simply multiplying this value for the amount of cows milked.
